No, this is a myth and an out-dated practice.  Actually, the law in NJ states that the consumer has the right to choose the auto body shop of his/her choice.

At Collex, we will write an accurate, thorough and fair estimate on your vehicle.  We work with all insurance companies, and we even have direct repair relationships with 12 insurance companies.

If you have gotten multiple estimates, please keep in mind that the lowest estimate is not always the “best” estimate.  Be sure to compare all estimates to be certain that they are thorough and complete.  Go with the most complete estimate, not the cheapest!
